Compare Kia K5 vs the Competition

Kia K5 vs. Toyota Camry and Honda Accord: Compare midsize sedans near Denver

Twenty years ago, the Kia Optima revolutionized its segment by putting to rest the idea that a refined midsize sedan couldn't also be affordable. Today, the Kia K5 represents an evolution of the same concept, picking up where Optima left off by providing a nearly unbeatable combination of style, amenities, accommodations, and value. The all-new K5 offers sleek and aggressive styling, improved performance and features, and available all-wheel-drive.

Already a favorite of customers and critics alike, the Kia K5 confidently welcomes competition from perennial class contenders. Here's a quick look at how it compares to two of the segment's most prominent nameplates, the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

Kia K5 vs. Toyota Camry

Accommodations: Occupants will love the K5's roomy cabin, especially in the front seats, where it offers more headroom (40.2 vs. 38.3 in.), legroom (46.1 vs. 42.1), and shoulder room (58.0 vs. 57.7) than the Toyota Camry. Additionally, while both models offer well-cushioned seats and smooth ride quality, the K5 is much quieter than Camry, providing excellent sound insulation on the highway. In comparison, road and wind noise are sore points for Toyota's midsize sedan.

Technology: While both models come standard with a touchscreen infotainment system and advanced smartphone integration, the Kia K5's standard 8-inch display is crisper and larger than the Camry's 7-inch screen. Plus, the K5 comes standard with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the Camry requires you to plug-in.

Value: Not only does the K5 offer more features on lower trim levels, but its starting MSRP is also nearly $2,000 below the Camry. Plus, Toyota can't touch Kia's industry-topping warranty coverage (5 years / 60,000 miles basic; 10 years / 100,000 miles powertrain).

Kia K5 vs. Honda Accord

Performance: When comparing base engines, the K5 and Accord are about even. The Accord has more horsepower (180 vs. 192), while the K5 has more torque (195 vs. 192 lb-ft). The K5's 8-speed automatic transmission is a bit smoother and more responsive, but both models accelerate to 60 mph in about 8 seconds.

However, when comparing optional powerplants, the K5 GT takes the lead with a turbocharged 2.5L four-cylinder that sends 290 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque to the wheels via Kia's first-ever eight-speed dual-wet-clutch automatic transmission. Honda Sport 2.0T modes equip a 2.0L turbo-four producing 252 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque.

Features: Both models offer well-equipped base models with standard features like 8-inch touchscreens, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (wireless for K5, wired for Accord), dual-zone automatic climate control, and advanced driver-assistance technologies. However, the Kia K5 offers an abundance of available amenities at lower tiers than the Accord. Examples include Blind-Spot Collision Warning, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning, LED headlights, keyless entry, remote start, a panoramic sunroof, and heated and ventilated front seats.

Value: Simply put, the Kia K5 offers more features for less money. Its base MSRP comes in more than $800 below the Accord, and the gap only widens as you move up the trim levels. A fully-loaded K5 GT costs about $4,500 less than the Accord Touring. And as with the Camry comparison, the K5 offers superior basic and powertrain warranty coverages.
